Everything We Know About the All-New Mitsubishi Pajero

For many Australians, Pajero is more than a familiar badge. It is the vehicle that carried families, caravans, camping gear and more than a few muddy boots across the country for almost four decades.

Pajero first arrived in Australia in 1983. Four generations followed, building a reputation for genuine 4WD capability, long-distance reliability and everyday practicality. Production ended in 2021, but the Pajero story was not finished.

After five years of development, testing and refinement, the All-New Mitsubishi Pajero has now been revealed and is due to arrive in Australia in December 2026.

Does it still deserve the Pajero name?

That is likely to be the first question asked by existing owners. And Mitsubishi appears to understand the weight carried by the badge.

Pajero earned its reputation away from the showroom. It won the Dakar Rally 12 times, including seven consecutive victories, while Australian owners put billions of kilometres beneath its wheels across highways, beaches, tracks and remote touring routes.

The new model has not abandoned that history. Instead, Mitsubishi has tried to combine the confidence and capability Pajero is known for with the comfort, technology and refinement expected from a modern large SUV.

Serious 4WD hardware remains at its core

Every new Pajero is powered by Mitsubishi's latest-generation 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine, producing 150kW and 480Nm from just 1,700rpm. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and supports a 3.5-tonne towing capacity.

Mitsubishi's Super Select II 4WD system returns with seven drive modes, while Super All-Wheel Control appears on Pajero for the first time. A low-range transfer case and rear differential lock are also standard across the range.

In practical terms, this is a Pajero designed to handle far more than the school run. It has the hardware required for towing, touring and exploring beyond the bitumen, while also being engineered to remain comfortable and manageable during everyday driving.

Familiar Pajero ideas have been reinvented

Generation two introduced Australian Pajero buyers to Super Select 4WD in 1991. More than three decades later, that central idea has evolved into Super Select II, seven selectable drive modes and the added control of S-AWC.

There is another clever nod to previous Pajeros inside the cabin. A new digital Multi Meter can display off-road information including altitude, direction of travel, vehicle pitch and roll and torque distribution bringing a familiar piece of Pajero character into the digital age.

A Pajero for the other six days of the week

The biggest changes may be the ones owners experience when they are not off-road.

The range includes five- and seven-seat configurations, front and rear automatic climate control, an electric tailgate, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging and USB-C power throughout the cabin. A 12.3-inch digital driver display and 12.3-inch multimedia screen are standard, together with a comprehensive range of safety and driver-assistance systems.

The Multi Around View Monitor and digital "see-through" bonnet camera should be particularly useful when manoeuvring a large SUV through tight car parks, narrow tracks or uneven terrain.

Higher grades take another step towards premium SUV territory. Exceed introduces larger 14.3-inch displays, heated seating, a refrigerated console and a 12-speaker Yamaha sound system. GSR adds ventilated front seats, driver position memory, distinctive two-tone leather, a panoramic roof and a digital rearview mirror.

    Four Pajeros to choose from

The Australian range will begin with four models:

GLS 5 is the practical five-seat entry point, with the core engine, towing and 4WD technology included.

GLS 7 adds third-row flexibility for larger families and those who regularly carry extra passengers.

Exceed steps up the interior comfort, displays, sound system and premium equipment.

GSR sits at the top of the range with its own styling details and the most comprehensive comfort and technology package.

Pricing and additional local details will be added to this article as they are cleared for publication.
